BROOKVILLE N.Y. – The women's soccer team went to Brookville, N.Y. for a non-conference match against the sixth nationally ranked Long Island University C.W. Post Pioneers. The Owls lost a very close game by the score of 2-1. With the loss, SCSU fell to (3-2), while C.W. Post remained undefeated, improving to (6-0).
Southern scored the games first goal in the 11th minute of action, when junior
Nicole Burton (Warwick, N.Y.) capitalized on a penalty kick giving SCSU a 1-0 lead. This goal was Burton's first of the season.
C.W. Post scored a goal of their own 15 minutes later, when Danielle DeLuca registered her first goal of the season off a pass from Melissa Pascarella.
In the second half of play, Pascarella headed home the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute off a corner kick from Tove Eriksson. SCSU could not find the back of the net again, finalizing a 2-1 loss.
Owl goalkeeper
Katie DiDio (Vernon Conn.) made five saves in the losing effort. Pioneer goalkeeper, Allie Weiser, tallied four saves in the win.
The next match for the Owls is on Sept. 20 at Jess Dow Field, featuring a conference game against Franklin Pierce. SCSU will promote CJSA at this game, welcoming many local high school teams from around the area. Kick off for the contest is scheduled for 7 p.m.
