Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The SCSU women's soccer team fell to No. 17 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce on Saturday night on CJSA night at Jess Dow Field. The Ravens improve their record to (4-1-1) with the win, while the Owls descend to (3-3).

Just two minutes into the first half of play, SCSU looked to strike first when Katrina Cook (Westtown, N.Y.) forced a turnover on the Raven defense, putting her one on one with the goalie. Her shot went just wide, immediately bringing the SCSU fans to their feet.

However, Franklin Pierce struck first with a goal in the 25th minute from Kristen Cilley on a free kick from well outside the 18-yard box. Then again, just 10 minutes later, Angelika Johansson collected a rebound in front of the SCSU goal, and scored the second goal of the game for Pierce, giving them a 2-0 lead at half.

In the second half, the Owls came out with vengeance and looked to cut into the Raven lead. Freshman Jenna Mallico (Milford, Conn.) scored a goal two minutes into the half on a pass from Gina Della Rose (Prospect, Conn.) to cut the lead in half, 2-1.

The Owls continued to keep the pressure on a very tough Franklin Pierce squad, but could not get the equalizer. In the 70th minute, Mackenzie Bulych added an insurance goal on a pass from Gabriela Demoner, completing a 3-1 victory for the No. 17 ranked team in the nation.

Raven goalkeeper, Brittany Ester tallied five saves in the win, while Katie DiDio (Vernon, Conn.) also made five saves in the losing effort for the Owls.

The Owls are back in action on Sept. 23 against Le Moyne College at Jess Dow Field. The conference match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
