NEW HAVEN, Conn. –
Jenna Mallico (Milford, Conn.) scored in the first overtime as SCSU defeated Le Moyne College 2-1 on Tuesday night at Jess Dow Field. The Owls surpassed the .500 mark with the win and improved their record to (4-3), while the Dolphins fell to (4-3-2).
In the first half of action, neither team could find the back of the net to get onto the scoreboard. Southern held much of the possession and controlled a 10-3 advantage in shots.
The Owls best chance came in the 31st minute when junior
Katrina Cook (Westtown, N.Y.) made a cross to
Erin Conrod (Cheshire, Conn.), who headed the ball to the lower left corner of the goal. Dolphin goalkeeper, Amanda Abbatiello made a diving save, to keep a 0-0 tie at halftime.
In the second half, junior
Danielle MacMurray (Griswold, Conn.) scored in the 58th minute to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. Conrod beat two defenders and found a slashing MacMurray, who placed a shot perfectly into the side netting of the goal.
However, the Dolphins scored a late equalizer in the 87th minute to tie the game at one. Courtney Paddock took a shot from outside the 18-yard box that found the left side of the goal.
In the first overtime, the Owls pressed vigorously for the game-winning goal. In the 98th minute, Cook took the ball down the left side of the field and found Mallico all alone in the middle for the game-winner. With the goal, Mallico now leads the team with four goals on the season.
Katie DiDio(Vernon, Conn.) tallied five saves in the win for the Owls, while Abbatiello made eight saves for the Dolphins in her third loss of the year.
The Owls are back in action on Sept. 27, when they travel to Waltham, Mass. to challenge the Falcons from Bentley College. Game time for the match is set for 2 p.m.
