Box Score
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore
Jason Villagomez (Stamford, Conn.) scored the game-tying goal with 1:37 left in regulation and sophomore
Eric Vazquez (Meriden, Conn.) added the game-winner in double overtime, as the Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team upset No.18 Le Moyne, 2-1 at Jess Dow Field on Wednesday night.
With the victory, the Owls improved to 9-3-1, 6-2-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Dolphins dropped to 10-2-2, 7-2-1 in the league.
Le Moyne wasted very little time opening the scoring summary. Just 35 seconds into the game, Angelo Reina found the back of the net off a pass from Joe Viviano for an early 1-0 lead.
Immediately after the goal, the Owls pressured vigorously for the equalizer. A mere five minutes later, freshman
Seth Ragaini (Seymour, Conn.) nearly created the game-tying goal. He whipped in a corner kick where
Cedric Panzu (Mons-En-Baroeul, France) and Frank Lara (Laredo, Texas) each had shots denied by the Dolphin goalkeeper.
At the sound of the halftime whistle, the score remained 1-0 in favor of the visiting team.
After the brief intermission, much of the action took place in the middle of the field. Junior
Harry Appiah (Pawtucket, R.I.) produced the best chance of the half in the 75th minute. He beat two defenders down the left side of the field, but had his powerful blast denied by a spectacular save.
Nonetheless as the clock winded down, the Owls' offense finally clicked and generated the equalizer. Ragaini crossed a ball from the left side of the field, where Villagomez flicked a header past the opposing goalie to tie the game at one. The mark came with just 1:37 left in regulation and sent the two teams into overtime.
In the 106th minute of play Vazquez received a pass from
Paul Templeton (Saltcoats, Scotland), made a crafty move at the 18-yard box and turned towards goal. From 12-yards out the forward blasted a shot underneath goalkeeper Steve White for the exciting 2-1 victory.
Andrew Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) collected five saves in his sixth win of the 2009 campaign, while White made five saves for the visiting Dolphins.
The Owls are back in action on Oct. 17 against UMass-Lowell. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
