NEW HAVEN, Conn. – With a late second half rally from the Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team, the Owls and the Yellowjackets battled to a 2-2 draw through double overtime on Tuesday night at Jess Dow Field. With the result, Southern improved to 7-8-1, 4-8-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while AIC moved to 7-8-2, 4-8-2 in league play.
Early on in the first half, AIC jumped all over the Owls' defense. Morgan Mastronardi and Cassie Ashwell scored back-to-back goals in the 11th and 12th minutes of play, giving the Yellowjackets a 2-0 advantage.
The Owls made an offensive push late in the first half, however could not find the back of the net. AIC carried a 2-0 lead into the locker rooms.
After the intermission, senior
Danielle MacMurray (Griswold, Conn.) sparked the Owls' offense when she converted a mishap in the AIC backfield into Southern's first goal. MacMurray's seventh goal of the season came in the 57th minute and cut the SCSU deficit in half.
Southern's offense continued to pressure the Yellowjackets' defense. In the 68th minute, freshman
Chelsea Downer (Colchester, Conn.) carried the ball down the right side of the field. She dribbled around the last defender and laced a shot past the opposing goalie for the equalizer.
Neither team found the game-winner in regulation, sending the game into overtime.
After 10 minutes of scoreless soccer, Southern was on the attack late in the second overtime. Senior
Katrina Cook (Westtown, N.Y.) found a dashing MacMurray at the top of the 18-yard box. MacMurray turned and blasted a shot that rattled the crossbar, deflecting away as the game came to an end. The final whistle concluded a 2-2 draw.
Junior
Katie DiDio (Vernon, Conn.) made nine saves in her first tie of the season, while Kara Potts registered eight stops for the visiting Yellowjackets.
The Owls return to action on Oct. 24 with a home contest against Southern New Hampshire. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
