NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior
Katrina Cook (Westtown, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal with 1:11 left in regulation, as the Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team defeated Southern New Hampshire, 1-0 on Saturday night at Jess Dow Field. With the win, the Owls improved to 8-8-1, 5-8-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Penmen dropped to 4-12-3, 2-10-3 in league play.
The game remained scoreless through the first 88 minutes of play. Substitution
Lindsay Stanton (Oxford, Conn.) dribbled down the right side of the field and served a ball into the middle of the penalty area. Cook dashed to the near post and flicked a crafty shot underneath the opposing goalie for the 1-0 thrilling victory.
Both teams earned three corner kicks and Southern controlled a slight 9-7 advantage in shots for the game.
Katie DiDio (Vernon, Conn.) and
Olivia Heffernan (Wallingford, Conn.) combined for six saves in the win, while Stef Young registered three stops for the visiting Penmen.
The Owls return to action on Oct. 28 with a home contest against Adelphi. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
