FORT MYERS, Fla. –
Kerry Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) and
Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.) each collected victories as the Southern Connecticut State University softball team swept its doubleheader against Molloy on Thursday afternoon. Southern defeated Molloy by the final scores of 8-6 and 4-0. With the wins, the Owls improved to 6-2 on the season, while the Lions descended to 3-7.
In game one of the doubleheader, the Owls pitching staff withheld a late sixth inning surge from the Lions for the victory. Larson came on in the sixth and seventh and closed out the game for her first career save. Iacomini picked up her third win in as many games this season.
Brittany Gandley (Holbrook, N.Y.) and Iacomini would provide all the offense their defense would need as the two connected for home runs in the contest. Gandley tagged a two-run shot in the first, while Iacomini belted a three-run shot in the fourth. The two combined 4-for-6 with six RBI and three runs scored.
Monica Savarese (Orange, Conn.) closed out the game going 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
In game two, the two new pitching acquisitions of Larson and
Brittany Hill (Durham, Conn.) combined for a two-hit shutout. Larson went six strong innings allowing just two hits, a walk and struck out three. Hill came on in the seventh and shut down the Lions receiving her first career save in the game.
Despite just two hits in the game, the Owls scraped out a victory.
Megan Caporossi (Northford, Conn.) did not have a hit but provided two RBI on a sac fly and an RBI ground out to the shortstop. Gandley provided also turned a ground out into a run for the Owls in the contest.
Southern is back in action on March 25 with a doubleheader against Adelphi in Garden City, N.Y. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
