WORCESTER, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball team dropped a pair of games against Assumption on Tuesday afternoon at Marois Field in Worcester, Mass. In game one, a valiant late inning comeback from the Owls was not enough as the Greyhounds squeaked by for a 7-6 victory in extra innings. Game two featured a low scoring affair, where once again Assumption came out on top,1-0. With the losses, Southern descended to 21-9 on the season, 10-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
In the front end of the doubleheader, the Greyhounds snatched a 6-0 lead after six innings of play. In the bottom half of the sixth, four hits and two errors resulted in five runs for the Greyhounds.
Despite the very large deficit faced by Southern with just three outs remaining, the Owls charged back in the top of the sixth with six runs of their own.
Robin Priest (Cheshire, Conn.),
Megan Caporossi (Northford, Conn.) and
Monica Savarese (Orange, Conn.) each reached base with one out in the inning. Senior
Christina Wolf (Newtown, Conn.) was hit by a pitch, followed by a
Kerry Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) single, bringing in the first two runs for the Owls. The big blow came from freshman
Alyssa Pagano (Monroe, Conn.) who stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and blasted her first career homerun. The grandslam put four additional runs on the scoreboard, nodding the game up at six apiece.
After a scoreless seventh, the Owls went down in order in the top half of the eighth as well. Conversely, the first two batters of the Greyhounds reached base in the bottom of the eighth. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners into scoring position, Caitlin Clary punched an RBI game-winning single to left center field for the exciting victory.
In game two of the doubleheader, Assumption battled through a grueling pitchers dual for a 1-0 victory. The Greyhounds scratched the game's only run off an error in the fifth inning. Iacomini tossed a gem, as the junior hurled six innings, allowed one run (unearned) on two hits and struck out three. In spite of the great performance, Southern only collected three hits of their own and left five runners stranded in the game.
The Owls are back in action tomorrow, April 15 with a Northeast-10 Conference showdown against LeMoyne. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 1 p.m.
