SCSU OWL CLASSIC
Fresh off a 12 win season, the Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team is set to open its 2009 campaign this week. The program will play host to the SCSU Owl Classic, a four team invitational at Jess Dow Field. On Aug. 27, Southern will open the tournament against the Lions of Molloy at 4 p.m. Two days later on Aug. 29, the Owls will take on Caldwell at 6 p.m. Northeast-10 Conference foe, Franklin Pierce will also complete in the event.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SEASON IN THE BOOKS
The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team enjoyed a fine campaign in 2008. The Owls went 12-5-2, their best record since 2001, and just missed out on an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Southern Connecticut also reached the semifinals of the Northeast-10 Tournament and ranked as high as No. 6 in the region during the season.

AN EXPERIENCED CLUB
The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team will return 18 members of last year's team. Furthermore, seven players will be undergoing their final seasons at SCSU.

A GOOD KNIGHT FOR THE OWLS
Senior Ashley Knight earned All-New England and All-Region honors for a second straight year and was also selected All-Northeast-10 for the third straight year by virtue of her play during the 2008 campaign. She secured the center back position for the Owls and helped the defense allow just 14 goals all season. In addition, all three of her goals turned out to be game-winners, two of which came in crucial Northeast-10 Conference matches.

LEADING THE WAY
Sophomore Jenna Mallico paced the offense with 17 points (six goals and five assists) for the Owls in 2008. For her efforts, she was named the Northeast-10 Conference Freshman of the Year and was also an All-New England and All-Region selection. Her four game-winning goals placed her in a tie for third place in the Northeast-10 Conference.

RIGHT BEHIND HER
Senior defender Nicole Burton tied Mallico for a team high six goals for the Owls. She also finished second on the team with 14 points on the season.

A STRONG SENIOR CLASS
Seniors Christina Nunes, Mara Primmer and Alicia Purzycki collectively solidified the group for the Owls in 2008. Purzycki was a three-year member of the squad and often saw time between the pipes for the Owls. Nunes and Primmer, both transfer students, came on strong in their only season at Southern Connecticut. Nunes was a 2008 NEWISA Senior Bowl participant and Primmer tallied five points on the season.

ALL-NEW ENGLAND HONORS
Seniors Ashley Knight and Gina Della Rose, along with freshman Jenna Mallico, each earned a spot on the 2008 New England Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) All-New England Region First Team.

A STANDOUT STOPPER
Junior goalkeeper Katie DiDio was exceptionally strong in between the pipes for the Owls. DiDio recorded 12 wins and a 0.861 save percentage. She allowed only 14 goals on the season for a minuscule 0.73 goals against average.

ON DECK
The Owls return to action on Sept. 2 for a Northeast-10 Conference clash against New Haven. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
