Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Danielle MacMurray (Griswold, Conn.) netted three goals on Saturday evening, as the Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team defeated Caldwell, 4-0 in the second round of the Owl Classic at Jess Dow Field. With the victory, the Owls improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Cougars dropped to 0-2. In addition, seniors MacMurray, Ashley Knight (Rockland, Mass.) and freshman Chelsea Downer (Colchester, Conn.) were named to the 2009 SCSU Owl Classic All-Tournament team for their performances this past weekend.

Southern's offense wasted very little time finding the scoreboard. Just 30 seconds into the half, senior Katrina Cook (Westtown, N.Y.) ripped a shot from just outside the 18-yard box that deflected off the crossbar. MacMurray collected the ball in front and slipped a shot into the goal for an early 1-0 lead.

In the 16th minute, MacMurray was on the prowl again. With the ball at her feet, MacMurray beat the last defender and placed a shot perfectly into the bottom left corner of the goal. The senior midfielder notched her second goal of the season to give SCSU a 2-0 advantage.

Just three minutes later, senior defender Knight provided more insurance for the Owls. Knight found the top left corner of the goal on a direct freekick from just outside the 18-yard box. Knight's first goal of the season gave Southern a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

In the second half, MacMurray completed the hatrick in the 69th minute when she placed a ball just inside the right post. MacMurray's first career three goal game capped off a 4-0 victory at Jess Dow Field.

Junior Katie DiDio (Vernon, Conn.) made one save for her second shutout of the year.

The Owls return to action on Sept. 2 when the team kicks off Northeast-10 Conference play against New Haven. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
