NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team battled Northeast-10 Conference foe, Saint Michael's to a 0-0 draw through double overtime on Saturday afternoon at Jess Dow Field. Junior goalkeeper,
Chris Rybacki (Putnam, Conn.) collected a career high six saves and his second shutout of the season for the Owls.
With the result, the Owls climbed to 4-2-1, 1-1-1 in Northeast-10 competition. The Purple Knights moved to 5-1-1, 1-1-1 in the league.
Neither team mustered much in the way of offensive threats during the first half of play. Southern's best opportunity came in the 30th minute when
Seth Ragaini (Seymour, Conn.) played a long ball to
Harry Appiah (Pawtucket, R.I.) down the left side. Appiah dashed towards the near post but his shot sailed high over the crossbar.
Saint Michael's enjoyed a 5-4 edge in shots in the opening stanza, but neither team reached the scoreboard for a 0-0 halftime score.
In the second half of action, defense was the name of the game. The quartet on the backline coupled with Rybacki's stellar performance was a nightmare for the offense of the Purple Knights. At the end of regulation, the two teams remained knotted at 0-0, sending the game into overtime.
Despite edging Saint Michael's 6-3 in shots and holding a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks in the extra time, Southern came away with a scoreless tie.
The Owls are back in action on Sept. 22 against cross-town rival, New Haven. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Chargers Field.
