Jenna Mallico (Milford, Conn.) completed the hat trick as the Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team defeated Bentley 5-1 Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Owls move to 7-3-3 overall, 5-3-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while Bentley drops to 0-10-2 overall and 0-8-2 in the conference.
Senior
Lindsay Stanton (Oxford, Conn.) opened the game up in the 18th minute of play when she volleyed a ball into the net off a pass from freshman Sarah Sheehan (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.). The Owls took a 1-0 lead going into halftime as well as 5-2 advantage in shots and 1-0 in corner kicks.
SCSU broke it open in the second half when Mallico recorded her first goal of the game only 2 minutes into the half. She earned her second goal to make the score 3-0 in the 54th minute, then only six minutes later she completed the hate trick to push the Owls past Bentley 4-0. Alison Ditolla (Trumbull, Conn.) booted the ball into the net off a penalty kick. Southern controlled the second half with seven shots to Bentleys two.
Bentley scored their lone goal in the 74th minute when there was a foul from Southern and sophomore Laura Muise (Newburyport, Mass.) was able to find the back of the net.
Junior
Olivia Heffernan (Wallingford, Conn.) recorded two saves before senior
Katie DiDio (Vernon, Conn.) came into the goal in the 71st minute. Miranda Charles (Jersey Shore, Pa.) tallied four saves of her own in the loss for the Falcons.
The Owls return to action Oct. 16 when they host No. 19 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce at Jess Dow Field. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. to conclude the homecoming events.
