NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The second game of Saturday's doubleheader between the No. 18 ranked Southern Connecticut State University baseball team and the Hawks of Saint Anselm College featured a total of 34 runs and 42 hits as the Owls took the game, 19-15. They also won the first game by the score of 5-3 as they improved to 31-9-1 overall and 19-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Saint Anselm dropped to 10-26, 8-14 with the loss.
Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.) led the team offensively as he went 5-for-7 on the day with six RBI and three runs scored.
In the first game of Saturday's double-dip, the Owls took a 4-0 lead after two innings and held the lead until the seventh. #A.J. Rouleau# (Westborough, Mass.) got things started in the second with a lead-off single to center field. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Cleary hit a triple to right center field to clear the bases. He would later cross home plate on a RBI double by
Kyle Rosadino (Berwyn, Pa.) as the Owls led 4-0.
Both teams exchanged runs in the seventh inning as the Hawks still trailed by four heading into the eighth. In the top of the inning, they went on a two-run rally but it wasn't enough as Southern took game one, 5-3.
Rosadino and Cleary led the team offensively with two hits each, going 2-for-5 and 2-for-3 respectively. Rosadino added a RBI and scored a run while Cleary recorded a team-high three RBI.
Ryan Yerina (Trumbull, Conn.) recorded the win in a complete game effort. He allowed just three runs (two unearned) on seven hits, walked one and struck out three.
The hits and runs never stopped in game two as both teams connected for at least 20 hits and 15 runs each. Saint Anselm started the game off with a four-run, five-hit first inning. They added two more runs in the second to take a early 6-0 lead. Southern would retaliate in the bottom half of the inning to score four runs on three hits as they cut the deficit to two.
However, the Hawks came right back with another strong inning. They recorded three runs in the top of the third as the Owls trailed 9-4 after two and a half innings. The lead would not hold for long as Southern managed to score five more runs with two one out remaining.
Nick DeProspo (Worcester, Mass.) was responsible for two of those runs as he hit a home run over the left field to tie the ballgame at 9-9.
The Owls opened the game up from innings five-to-seven. Rosadino connected for a home run in the bottom of the fifth to get the momentum swinging back in the Owls direction. In the bottom of the sixth they added five runs on five hits and followed that up with another four-run inning in the seventh as they took a commanding 19-9 lead.
Despite a 10-run advantage, the Owls lead was not safe. After four scoreless innings, the Hawks' bats picked up once again as they managed to pull together a six-run rally and cut the deficit to just four. However,
Ed Bethke (Branford, Conn.) stopped their rally short as he got Southern out of a huge jam. With the bases loaded and just one out, Bethke got back-to-back batters to fly out and end the inning. The Owls would go on to take an impressive win in an offensive showdown by the score of 19-15.
As a team, the Owls recorded 20 hits, seven of which were extra-base hits. Rosadino went 2-for-4 in the game with a double and a home run. He recorded seven RBI and scored twice. DeProspo was 3-for-5 with a triple, home run, four RBI and two runs scored.
Eric Schlitter (Guilford, Conn.),
Bryan Dorsey (Cheshire, Conn.), Cleary and
Greg Malen (Stamford, Conn.) rounded out the Owls top offensive performers with three hits each.
Southern returns to the field tomorrow, April 25 for a doubleheader at AIC.
