Southern New Hampshire Blanks Women’s Soccer, 3-0

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Southern New Hampshire University recorded a 3-0 Northeast-10 victory over the Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team on Friday night. The Penmen improved to a 2-1 overall and a 1-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Owls loss drops 2-1-1 overall and a 0-1-1 in the conference.

Sophomore Daniela Abruzzese (Parsippany, N.J.) broke up a scoreless game with only four minutes left in the first half when she intercepted a pass from goalkeeper Olivia Heffernan (Wallingford, Conn.) at the 35 yard line and torched the ball over Heffernan's head.

The Penmen went straight to business at the start of the second half when freshman Ashley Jaskula (Palmer, Mass.) crossed the ball from outside the 18 yard mark to Alyssa Thayer (Hooksett, N.J.) who then found sophomore Kaleigh Roberge (Manchester, N.H.) on the left side to net the ball in the 51st second of the half.

The Owls battled tough but Roberge would tack on an insurance goal in the 70th minute of play when she dribbled the ball into the 6-yard box to put the Penmen up 3-0.

Sophomore Maggie Weldon (Manchester, N.H.) recorded five saves in her first shut out of the season while Heffernan tallied up 13 of her own in 78:34 minutes of play before senior Katie DiDio (Vernon, Conn.) entered to game.

Southern New Hampshire outshot the Owls 28-9 and had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

SCSU will look to bounce back when it hosts Assumption College at Jess Dow Field Wednesday at 7 p.m.
