Jenna Mallico (Milford, Conn.) capped a three-goal second half comeback with her second tally of the night, that coming with just 1:31 left in regulation, to lift the Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Assumption on Wednesday evening at Jess Dow Field. The Owls trailed 2-0 at halftime before a stirring second half rally enabled them to secure their first Northeast-10 Conference win of the year.
SCSU is now 3-1-1, 1-1-1 in NE-10 play. Assumption dropped to 1-3-1, 1-2 in league play.
Assumption struck first with a tally from Molly Kessler in the 30th minute. The Greyhounds extended their cushion to two goals with a marker just over 12 minutes later.
The Owls turned things up a notch in the second half. They cut the lead in half just under eight minutes into the stanza when
Flavia Bernardes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) knocked home the rebound of a Mallico shot just under the crossbar.
Mallico evened the score with a picturesque goal that came with 15:24 remaining. Dribbling the ball in the left side of the box, she moved to her right before firing a shot into the upper right corner of the cage.
Assumption nearly took the lead with just over five minutes left in regulation, but a bid caromed off the crossbar and was corralled by Owls' goalie
Katie DiDio (Vernon, Conn.) before it crossed the goal line.
Mallico netted the winner after dribbling along the goal line to the right of the Assumption net and shooting a low shot into the left corner.
DiDio finished with five saves in the contest.
The Owls are back in action on Saturday for a road game at St. Michael's.
