NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team shut out cross-town rival University of New Haven, 4-0, in Tuesday night's lightning shortened game. With the win the Owls improve to 5-1 overall, 3-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while New Haven dropped to 2-4-1 on the season, and 2-4 in Northeast-10 play.
Sophomore midfielder
Ross McGibney (Dublin, Ireland) scored two goals in the first half put the Owls ahead 2-0 at intermission.
McGibney's first goal of the game came with 36:11 remaining in the first half.
Yoni Feldman (Ramat Gan, Israel) and
Seth Ragaini (Seymour, Conn.) assisted on the goal.
With 22:21 to go in the first half, McGibney's header gave the Owls a 2-0 lead.
SCSU added two goals in the second half, the first off the foot of
Paul Templeton (Saltcoats, Scotland) as he scored on a penalty kick 11:45 into the second half.
The Owls final goal was unassisted as
Matan Bik's (Hamden, Conn.) shot hit the back of the net to give SCSU a commanding 4-0 lead.
Junior goalkeeper
Andrew Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) recorded seven saves in the winning effort.
Jonathon Creem had four saves, as he shared time in net with J.J. Comeau for New Haven.
The Owls return to action when they travel to Stonehill on Saturday.
