Women's Soccer Soars Over Felician in Season Opener, 6-1

RINDGE, N.H.- The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team posted a 6-1 win over Felician College at the Franklin Pierce University Classic to start off its season on Friday. It was the season opener for both teams. Freshman Sarah Sheehan (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) contributed two goals and assisted on another to lead the Owls.

Sheehan got the scoring started for the Owls as she scored her first goal of her career off a redirected pass from freshman Laura Barberia in the 10th minute of play.

SCSU led 2-0 after junior Alison Ditolla (Trumbull, Conn.) netted a goal off of a pass in front of the net from Sheehan. 

Sophomore Lisamarie Tarchini (Bristol, Conn.) contributed to the action after scoring a goal off her own rebound off the top of the goal to make the score 3-0. Sheehan composed her second goal of the game in the 21st minute off a cross from freshman Flavia Bernardes (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Bernardes earned her second assist of the game after passing to sophomore Lauren Muscarella (Massapequa, N.Y.) for a goal to extend the score 4-0 with three minutes to go before the end of the first half.

In the second half, freshman Kristen Mortelliti scored the first goal of the season for Felician and the first of her career.

Bernardes tacked on one more insurance goal in the 76th minute, finalizing a 6-1 victory.

The Owls dominated the game, outshooting the Golden Falcons 28-3. SCSU also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Junior Olivia Heffernan (Wallingford, Conn.) notched one save before being replaced in the second half by senior Katie DiDio (Vernon, Conn.) who allowed one goal to score.

Junior Shaneil Lorenzo (Dover, N.J.) took the loss after allowing five first half goals and making six saves. Sophomore Allie Couzo (Sayreville, N.J.) stopped seven shots and allowed one goal in the second half.

SCSU will return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. against Queens College for its second game at the Franklin Pierce University Classic, while Felician will face Franklin Pierce at 4 p.m.
