POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Junior Matthew Sorena (Brookfield, Conn.) won the 100 fly (53.931), 200 fly (1:57.52) and 1,650 freestyle (16:46.37) and also had a hand in the winning 200 freestyle relay to pace the efforts of the Southern Connecticut State University men's swimming and diving team in its meet at Marist on Saturday afternoon. Classmate Austin Mizzell (Bristol, Conn.) also added first place showings in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.69) and the 200 breaststroke (2:12.96). The Owls had seven first place finishes in all on the day. The host Red Foxes won the meet by a score of 161-122.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Sorena, Miguel Nesrala (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic), Thomas Hardy (East Massapequa, N.Y.) and Jacob Loschiavo (Waterbury, Conn.) claimed that event in a time of 1:31.95.
Freshman Oscar Castillo (Norwalk, Conn.) also captured the 400 IM in 4:33.82.
The Owls also received second place finishes from the 200 medley relay team of Domenick Errico (West Hartford, Conn.), Hardy, Mizzell and Castillo. Chad Snyder (Winchester Center, Conn.) was second in one- and three-meter diving, while Thomas Kuhn (Yakima, Wash.) finished second in the 400 IM behind Castillo. The 200 freestyle relay quartet of Jimmy Zummo (Stockhokm, N.J.), Sal Marino (Middletown, Conn.), Errico and Michael Diverniero (East Haven, Conn.) also placed second.
The Owls are back in action tomorrow when they host Connecticut College at noon.
