Owls Use Team Effort To Defeat Queens On Senior Day

The Owls honored their seniors prior to Tuesday's win against Queens.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Austin Mizzell (Bristol, Conn.) won both the 50 and 100 freestyle events and swam a leg of the winning 200 medley relay as the Southern Connecticut State University men's swimming and diving team captured a 109-83 win over Queens College on Tuesday afternoon at Hutchinson Natatorium. It was the final tuneup for the Owls before next weekend's Northeast-10 Conference Championships.

The 200 medley relay team of Mizzell, Michael Diverniero (East Haven, Conn.), Matthew Sorena (Brookfield, Conn.) and Miguel Nesrala (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) claimed their event in a time of 1:40.74 to start the day for the Owls.

Sorena followed with a win in the 1,000 freestyle, touching the wall in 10:02.83.

Mizzell added individual wins in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.69 and the 100 freestyle in 50.46.

Oscar Castillo (Norwalk, Conn.) took first place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:05.78.

Chad Snyder (Winchester Center, Conn.) scored a 265.05 on the one-meter board to claim first place in that event for the Owls.

Thomas Kuhn (Yakima, Wash.) won the 200 fly with a time of 2:06.18.

Nesrala also collected first place honors in the 200 backstroke, as he posted a time of 2:04.21.

The Owls are back in action on Feb. 4 for the NE-10 Championships at Moore Field House.
