Box Score

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Megan Hiss (Trinidad, Colo.) helped the Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team avenge a loss to American International College earlier this week with a close five set victory (25-22, 25-23, 21-25, 23-25, 15-13) today. Hiss recorded 16 kills with two service aces and two block assists with a 0.368 hitting percentage in the Owls' second win of the day.

Syriah Celestine (Greenlawn, N.Y.) and Megan Lyons (Cold Spring, N.Y.) each tallied eight kills in the effort, while Danielle Jordine (Stamford, Conn.) and Caelese Brown (West Hartford, Conn.) each had four kills apiece. Lyons also scooped up 11 digs. Kimberly Lachowicz (Mansfield, Texas) recorded 37 assists with 11 digs, while Vanessa Sullivan registered a team-high 22 digs for the Owls.

The Owls seemed to capitalize on small mistakes by the Yellow Jackets including a few errors by AIC in the first set to a take it, 25-22. Much of the same in the second set as Southern Connecticut jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead only to be tied at 10-10.  The Owls fell behind 12-14, then 16-19 before rallying to take the set 25-23.

Going into the third, the Yellow Jackets were in a must win situation as they pulled off two narrow wins in the third and fourth sets. Going into the fifth and final set all tied, the Owls would not be denied a victory. The set was all tied at 3-3, then 7-7 before the Owls rattled off six straight points to find themselves up 13-7. AIC responded with a 6-1 run before the Owls sealed it with a kill by Hiss from Lachowicz to take the set 15-13 and match, 3-2.

With the victory, the Owls improve to 14-5 overall.

After today's set of matches, the Owls will be back in action Tuesday at home against Pace with a 7 p.m. start time.
