NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior forward
Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a team-high 24 points to go along with six rebounds and five blocked shots, but the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team dropped an 81-68 decision to Bridgeport on Friday afternoon.
The Owls moved to 6-5 on the year with the loss, while Bridgeport improved to 7-5.
Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) was the only other Owl in double figures, as he finished with 15 points on the night.
The game was a close affair for the first 20 minutes before Bridgeport pulled away in the second half. Southern Connecticut led by four points, 17-13, with just over 12 minutes to play in the opening stanza before the Purple Knights went on a 25-9 run over the next eight minutes to build a 38-26 lead. However, the Owls rallied with a 13-4 run of their own to cut the deficit to three at halftime, 42-39.
The Owls were down four, 49-45, with 16 minutes left. From there, the visitors went on an 11-1 spurt to build a 14 point lead. SCSU was unable to cut the deficit to single digits the rest of the way.
Ryan Belote (Meriden, Conn.) posted career highs of seven points and five rebounds, while
Kyle Callanan (Bennington, Vt.) added a half dozen for the Owls.
SCSU is back in action on Jan. 3 for a Northeast-10 game at Franklin Pierce.
