NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball team played as the away team on their own field to make up for a double header supposed to be played in Worcester on Tuesday, but was made up today. The Owls won the first game 2-0 with a string of hits in the top of the ninth inning and fell short 3-0 in the second half of the double header.
The Owls are now 8-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Game one was a pitcher's duel between the Owls'
Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.) and Assumption's Chelsea Durso.
The game was scoreless into the bottom of the seventh when Assumption loaded the bases with no outs. Larson induced a groundball double play before forcing the final batter to ground out to third base to end the threat.
Southern Connecticut took the lead in the ninth inning.
Jessica Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) walked to lead off the frame.
Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn.) came in to pinch-run and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Alyssa Pagano (Durham, Conn.).
Stacy Pouilot (Ledyard, Conn.) followed with a RBI single up the middle that plated Muscarella. When the throw from center field was delayed, Pouliot moved up to second base.
Pouliot moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from
Shawna Mallory (Simi Valley, Calif.).
Larson scattered nine hits to earn the win in the circle for the Owls.
In the second game, the Owls seemed to be dazed by the pitching effort of Assumption's Jennifer Lowrey. The Owls managed three hits through seven.
The Owls managed back-to-back singles by
Jessica Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) and
Alyssa Pagano (Monroe, Conn.) with one out in the top of the second but could not capitalize with a runner in scoring position.
Brittany Hill (Durham, Conn.) pitched four innings giving up three earned runs and registering three strike outs and managaed to pitch out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the third. Rosa came in as relief with runners on second and third and gave up a no out double that plated two to put Assumption up 3-0.
The Owls will be back in action Thursday as they travel to NYIT for a double header scheduled to start at noon.
