NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team had a two-goal lead, and was able to hold on to defeat Assumption, 2-1, in a Northeast-10 Conference game at Jess Dow Field in New Haven, Conn.
The Owls (9-4-3, 7-4-3 NE-10) wasted no time getting a 1-0 lead when
Suzane Pires (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored her sixth goal of the season in the fourth minute. Pires had a shot blocked, but took another shot when the ball deflected back to herself.
The Owls would take the 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Owls tacked on what seemed to be some breathing room for a 2-0 lead when
Julia Gotta (East Berlin, Conn.) scored her first goal of the season in the 63rd minute, assisted to Pires as a result of a corner kick.
Assumption (3-10-3, 3-8-3 NE-10), however, would not go away.
The Greyhounds made it a 2-1 game in the 77th minute when Paige Radomski took a shot through the legs of goalkeeper
Elizabeth Nickerson (Seaford, Va.).
The Owls would play good defense down the stretch and pull out the win.
Nickerson allowed one goal with four saves in 90 minutes of play.
