A NEW SEASON BEGINS
The 2012-13 season kicks off this weekend for the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team. The Owls open the campaign on Saturday against Goldey-Beacom before the Owls take on the University of Bridgeport on Sunday. Both games are slated for 6 p.m. starts at UB's Hubbell Gymnasium.
IN SEASON OPENERS
The Owls are 26-36 all-time in season-opening games. SCSU has won its last two season openers, including an 84-64 win over Post last year.
ALL-TIME AGAINST GOLDEY-BEACOM
Saturday's contest will mark the first-ever men's basketball contest between the two schools.
ALL-TIME AGAINST BRIDGEPORT
Bridgeport leads the all-time series against the Owls with a 50-33 record. Sunday will be SCSU's 84th game against Bridgeport, the most meetings against any opponent in program history. The Purple Knights won both games between the two clubs played last year. The teams will also play twice this season, with UB making a return trip to New Haven on Dec. 19.
LAST SEASON AGAINST BRIDGEPORT...GAME 1
Greg Langston scored a career-high 33 points as the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team trimmed a 17-point halftime deficit to just two points before ultimately dropping an 80-69 decision to the University of Bridgeport on Nov. 13, 2011 in Bridgeport, Conn.
• The Owls trailed 39-22 at halftime and were down 16, 45-29, with 16:24 remaining. From there, SCSU scored 17 of the next 20 points over a stretch of 4:54 – Langston registered 13 points in the run – to close within a bucket, 48-46 with 11:30 left in the contest.
• From there, the UB lead fluctuated between four and seven points for the next six minutes before the Purple Knights used a 7-0 spurt to distance themselves from the Owls.
LAST SEASON AGAINST BRIDGEPORT...GAME 2
Trevon Hamlet scored a team-high 24 points to go along with six rebounds and five blocked shots, but the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team dropped an 81-68 decision to Bridgeport on Dec. 30, 2011 at Moore Field House.
The Owls were down four, 49-45, with 16 minutes left. From there, the visitors went on an 11-1 spurt to build a 14 point lead. SCSU was unable to cut the deficit to single digits the rest of the way.
IN THE NE-10 PRESEASON POLL
The Owls have been selected sixth in the Northeast-10 Conference preseason poll. They finished tied for fifth in the regular season standings last season.

OWLS CONTINUE TO MOVE FORWARD
The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team continued its upward climb in 2011-12 with its best season in a decade. The Owls concluded the campaign with a 14-13 mark, good for their first winning season since 2001-02. In addition, the team also finished in fifth place in the Northeast-10 Conference, the highest placement since joining the league.
THREE OWLS RECOGNIZED BY NORTHEAST-10
Trevon Hamlet,
Greg Langston and
Tylon Smith were all recognized by the Northeast-10 Conference for their play during the 2011-12 campaign. Hamlet and Langston were both selected for the All-Conference squads, while Smith was tabbed for the All-Rookie Team. It was the second year in a row that Hamlet had collected All-NE-10 honors.
EXCELLING IN THE CLASSROOM
Southern Connecticut had six student-athletes selected to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for their work in the classroom during the 2011-12 academic year.
HAMLET FINISHES AMONG NCAA BLOCKS LEADERS
Trevon Hamlet finished the year ranked No. 17 in Division II blocks/game. Hamlet averaged 2.3 blocks per contest on the year.
CONFERENCE RESURGENCE
The Owls have registered 21 conference victories over the past two seasons, the highest win total since they entered the league with 22 conference wins from 2000-02.
ONE FOR THE AGES
The Owls played just their third four-overtime game in program history in the game against St. Michael's on Jan. 11. SCSU also went to four extra frames against Pace in 1996 and Coppin State in 1984. Ironically, the Owls have yet to win one of those four overtime contests.
DEFENSE TELLS THE STORY AGAIN
In 2010-11, the Owls merited just 67.4 points per game in their 12 wins, but allowed 75.9 points per game in their 15 losses. A similar trend followed the Owls in 2011-12, who meriting just 65.7 points in their 14 wins, but 83.1 points in their 13 losses.
OWLS RANKED NEAR THE TOP
Greg Langston finished the season ranked third in the Northeast-10 in scoring with 16.7 points a contest, while
Trevon Hamlet was fifth with an average of 16.3 points per game.
BALANCED SCORING TRANSLATES INTO WINS
In eight of its 14 wins in 2011-12, Southern Connecticut had at least four players reach double digits in scoring. The Owls had a quintet hit the double digit mark in wins over Post, Adelphi and Concordia.
BLOCK PARTY CONTINUES
After being amongst the leaders in blocks within the Northeast-10 Conference in 2010-11,
Trevon Hamlet picked up right where he left off with 61 blocks, which ranked first in the NE-10.
