Women's Soccer Wins Opener Over Philadelphia, 1-0

Junior Suzane Pires and the Owls defeat Philadelphia, 1-0.
Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team opened the 2012 season with a late 1-0 win at Philadelphia on Friday in a non-conference match-up.

The game remained scoreless at the end of the first half.

The Owls (1-0) turned up the pressure early in the second half by getting into Philadelphia territory and firing many shots on the goalie.

In the 59th minute, sophomore Bryana Poulin (Webster, Mass.) gave the Owls what they were looking for with her first goal of the season for the 1-0 lead, assisted to Sarah Brochu (Wilbraham, Mass.).

The Owls out-shot Philadelphia, 12-2, in the second half and kept up the pressure for the entire half to keep the lead.

The Owls had limited scoring chances in the first half, as they were out-shot 7-3.

Philadelphia (0-1) tried to challenge Owls freshman goalie Elizabeth Nickerson (Seaford, Va.) with many opportunities to score in the first half. Nickerson, however, was up for the challenge.

Nickerson had 5 saves in 90 minutes of play.

The Owls will return to action with their home opener at Jess Dow Field against Mercy on Sept. 4 at 4 p.m.
