Whitley Leads Softball Over New Haven, 3-2 (9 Innings); Game Two Called Due To Darkness

Game 1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball team defeated New Haven in one game today, 3-2 (9 innings) while game two was called due to darkness at Pelz Field in New Haven, Conn.

In game one, Kristin Whitley (N. Andoiver, Mass.) had the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Owls defeated UNH, 3-2.
UNH took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Keri Tricinelli had an RBI single to right field, scoring Christina Gelardi.

With second and third and nobody out, the Owls would take the 2-1 lead with two runs in the fifth. Sarah Koerner (Coventry, R.I.) had an RBI single to the pitcher, scoring Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) Koerner would later score on a wild pitch by UNH starter Micah Stonesifer.

UNH tied the game 2-2 when Brooke Fisher hit an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Meghan Chamoff.

In the ninth, the Owls had two on base with one out when Whitley singled to score Koerner from second base.

Koerner led SCSU going 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs. Stacy Pouliot and Whitley each had two hits.

Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) got the win for SCSU going 9.0 innings while allowing two runs on 11 hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts.

In game two, UNH took an early 2-0 lead in the first before the Owls score three runs in the second to make it 3-2 after Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) hit a solo home run followed by an RBI triple Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.) and Bucko scored on a wild pitch.

The two teams would then go back and forth with the lead before UNH took a 6-5 lead in the sixth after Chamoff scored on a throwing error.

Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn.) tied the game 6-6 in the sixth with a one out double.

The game was then stopped in the top of the seventh inning.
