SCSU Softball Drops Two to Adelphi University

Garden City, N.Y.-- Southern Connecticut State University Softball dropped a Northeast 10 conference doubleheader to Adelphi in Garden City, N.Y. With the losses, the Owls move to 12-14 overall and 5-11 in the NE10, while the Panthers move to 17-12 overall and 13-2 in the NE10. 

On the mound for the Owls, Ashley Lewis and Giselle DeLutri both tossed complete games. Lewis went 10.1 innings allowing six runs, only two earned, while striking out three and DeLutri tossed six frames allowing seven runs, four of which were earned, while striking out four. Offensively for the Owls, Brianna Pearson and Sophia Angiolini led the way each with two RBI and Izzy Ingersoll had five hits across the two games. 

Game 1: Adelphi 6, SCSU 5 (11 Inn.)
In game one, Lewis got the start and tossed 10 1/3 innings. She allowed six runs, only two of which were earned, on eight hits while striking out three. Offensively for the Owls, Angiolini went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Pearson had two RBI and Ingersoll had two hits. 

After allowing two runs in the first six innings, the Owls back's were against the wall going into the top of the 7th.Down 2-0, the Owls began to come back. The inning began with a single by Nadia Cestari. From there a series of errors allowed both Ingersoll and Gianna Iaquinto to load the bases for Pearson. With the bases loaded, Pearson was hit by a pitch which scored Cestari, cutting the lead to 2-1. With the bases still loaded and two outs, Angiolini became the hero when she singled to left field to score Pearson and Iaquinto and gave the Owls a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the 7th. 

In the bottom of the inning, Adelphi tied the game  at 3-3, sending the game to extra innings.

After a quiet 8th inning, the Owls offense woke up in the 9th. Using the international tiebreaker rule, Samantha LaFemina was placed at second base to start the inning. Ingersoll led off with a single to move LaFemina to third. After a strikeout by Iaquinto, Pearson drove a ball out right field, which allowed LaFemina to tag up and score to give the Owls a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 9th. Once again, Adelphi  answered in the bottom half of the inning  when they scored on a throwing error to tie the game at 4-4. 

Continuing the momentum in the 10th inning, the Owls added another run. The inning began with a walk by Angiolini, which set up Olivia Young with runners at first and second base. Young flew out to right field, allowing Karley Austin to advance to third base. With a runner 60 feet away, Cheyenne LaTouche sent a fly ball to center field that scored Austin and gave the Owls a 5-4 lead.  

The Panthers answered again in the bottom of the 10th inning, tying the game up at 5-5. After a scoreless top of the 11th from the Owls, Adelphi added another run in the bottom half of the 11th inning to take a 6-5 win. 

Game 2: Adelphi 7, SCSU 2
In game two, DeLutri got the start and went the distance, tossing six innings while allowing seven runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits and striking out four. Offensively for the Owls, Ingersoll went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Christina DeNovellis had a home run. 

After allowing three runs in the bottom of the 2nd, the Owls added a run in the top of the 3rd inning. The run came when DeNovellis blasted a pinch-hit home run, which was her first home run as an Owl, to cut the lead to 3-1. 

After a quiet 4th inning, the Owls struck again in the 5th. The inning began with a lead off double by Cestari. From there, Ingersoll singled to score Cestari and cut the lead to 3-2. 

That would be the last of the offense of the day for the Owls as the Panthers scored four more runs in the remaining innings to take a 7-2 win. 

Southern Connecticut is back in action on Saturday April 11 when they take on Saint Michael's in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at Pelz Field beginning at 2:30 p.m.
