CLERMONT, Fla. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball team opened up the 2013 season with two losses today against Dowling in Clermont, Fla.
The Owls (0-2) lost game one, 6-0, and then lost in game two, 1-0.
In game one, Dowling made it 2-0 in the fourth inning after Stephanie Tarango hit a two-run home run.
Dowling then made it 4-0 in the fifth inning after a two-run double from Arianna LaPuma.
Down 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth, SCSU had a chance to cut the lead after
Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) loaded the bases with a walk and two outs, but the Owls could not capitalize.
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) took the loss for SCSU while going 5.0 innings, and allowing four earned runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Stacy Pouliot (Mystic, Conn.) led the Owls with two hits.
In game two, Dowling scored an early run in the first inning, and made it stand for remainder of the game.
SCSU had the bases loaded in the fifth inning after
Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn.) had a fielder's choice, but the Owls did not score.
Audrey Dolloff (Raynham, Mass.) took the loss going 2.0 innings and giving up one earned run on two hits with one strikeout.
Sarah Koerner (Coventry, R.I.) and Downs each had two hits in game two.
