NEW HAVEN, Conn. -
Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.) had the game-winning single in game two to lead the Southern Connecticut State University softball team to a sweep of No. 14 nationally ranked Adelphi in two Northeast-10 Conference games at Pelz Field in New Haven, Conn.
In game one,
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) had a complete game to lead SCSU, 2-1.
SCSU (18-14) took the 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on two unearned runs. After
Sarah Koerner (Coventry, R.I.) reached on an error,
Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) hit a two-run home run to left field, scoring Koerner.
Adelphi (25-9) made it 2-1 in the sixth after Victoria Wink had an RBI single, scoring Amy Caird.
Cockrill went 7.0 innings while allowing one earned run on three hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
Hoffman went 2-for-3 while Bucko went 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Cockrill then got a 1-2-3 seventh inning for the win.
In game two, Adelphi had the bases loaded with one out, and would make it 1-0 after a sac fly from Elizabeth Linder, scoring Katie Andrews.
The Owls then scored two runs in the fourth after Bucko had an RBI ground out, and then
Alyssa Downs had an RBI single, scoring
Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.).
Adelphi tied the game 2-2 when Linder hit a solo home run to left field.
In the seventh, Buch led off the inning with a walk and would score the game-winner after Hoffman hit the single up the middle for the win.
Jessica Van Alphen (Hudson, N.Y.) got the no decision for SCSU going 3.1 innings while allowing one run on four hits with two strikeouts. Yesenia Evaristo (Bethel, Conn.) got the win going 3.2 innings while allowing one run on four hits with three walks and one strikeout.
