NEW HAVEN, Conn. - For the second consecutive game, the Southern Connecticut State University softball team had a walk-off win as
Stacy Pouliot (Ledyard, Conn.) hit the game-winning single in the bottom of the 12th inning to defeat New Haven, 7-6, in 12 innings in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest game from Pelz Field in New Haven, Conn.
The game resumed from March 27 and in the top of the seventh inning when the second game of the doubleheader was haulted on darkness.
SCSU had scoring opportunities througout the extra innings with runners in scoring position, but finally broke through in the 12th.
In the seventh inning, New Haven (22-8, 5-3 NE-10 SW) stranded a runner on third with two outs after Courtney Reed grounded out.
Starting in the 10th inning, both teams were allowed to put automatic runners on second base to begin the inning. In the 11th inning. SCSU had a chance to put two runners on after
Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) singled before New Haven was able to get out of the inning without giving up a run.
In the bottom of the 12th, the Owls (19-14, 7-1 NE-10 SW) had runners on first and second with one out when
Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.) loaded the bases with a single to the pitcher. Pouliot then came to the plate and hit a hard single down the left field line, leading to
Kristin Whitley (N. Andover, Mass.) to score the game-winning run.
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) got the win for SCSU going 5.1 innings while allowing no runs on no hits with five walks and six strikeouts.
Back on March 27, UNH took an early 2-0 lead in the first before the Owls score three runs in the second to make it 3-2.
Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) had led the scoring hit a solo home run followed by an RBI triple
Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.) and Bucko scored on a wild pitch.
The two teams would then go back and forth with the lead before UNH took a 6-5 lead in the sixth after Meghan Chamoff scored on a throwing error.
Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn.) tied the game 6-6 in the sixth with a one-out double.
The game was then stopped in the top of the seventh inning.
