NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball team advanced to the second round of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament with a 2-1 win over Le Moyne in a first round game from Pelz Field in New Haven, Conn.

SCSU will now play UMass-Lowell in a second round game on Thursday at 4 p.m. from Southern New Hampshire in Manchester, N.H.

Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) got the win for SCSU (30-19) throwing a complete game of seven innings while allowing one run, no runs earned, on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Sarah Harrison got the loss for Le Moyne (21-21) going six innings while allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Owls took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and never looked back behind strong pitching from Cockrill on the mound.

Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) gave the Owls the 1-0 lead with a lead-off home run to left center.  Bucko went 2-for-3 with a home run, one RBI and two runs.

In the fourth, Le Moyne put runners on first and second after Vanessa Utley walked with two outs and a chance to tie the game. Harrison then popped up to third to end the inning.

In the sixth, SCSU got a big insurance run and took a 2-0 lead. After Bucko singled and stole second to get into scoring position, Kaley Marden (Fremont, Calif.) had a two-out RBI single to left field, scoring Bucko from second. Marden went 1-for-4 in the game with one RBI.

Le Moyne threatened in the top of the seventh, and would cut the lead to 2-1. With runners on first and second and one out, Demetra Kermidas popped up to the infield for the second out. The runners would move up led by Erin Batson scoring on an error and moving Allison Reynolds to second base. Cockrill then struck out Cara Cawley swinging to end the game and send the Owls to the next round.
