ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball team fell in extra innings earlier today to Molloy, 5-3, in a winners' bracket game on the second day of the NCAA East Regional at Bob Klein Field. SCSU will now play in an elimination game against No. 20 Caldwell at 10 a.m. due to rain on Saturday.
After Molloy grabbed the early 1-0 lead in the second on a home run, the Owls responded with three runs in the bottom of the third. With runners on first and second and one out,
Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) gave SCSU a 3-1 lead with a three-run home run down the left field line, scoring
Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) and
Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.).
Molloy tied the game 3-3 with two runs in the fifth. Neither team was able to score from there until extra frames.
In the extra innings, Molloy struck with two runs in the top of the eighth, and the Owls were unable to score in the bottom of the frame.
Downs led the Owls going 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBI while Bucko was also 1-for-4 with one run.
Yesenia Evaristo (Bethel, Conn.) suffered the loss for SCSU (32-21), as she went 3.2 innings and allowed two runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout. Jessica Van Alphen (Hudson, N.Y.) got a no decision, going 4.1 innings with three runs on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Megan Butterworth got the win for Molloy (49-12), going five innings and allowed no runs on two hits with six strikeouts.
