Box Score EASTON, Mass. - Senior linebacker
Brian Wilcox (Jericho, Vt.) returned his second interception of the day 25 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to provide the margin of victory for the Southern Connecticut State University football team to a 17-14 win at Stonehill today.
The Owls improved to 2-6 overall and 2-5 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Stonehill is 3-5 and 3-4 in league action.
Southern Connecticut forced four inteceptions on the day and allowed only one defensive touchdown en route to the win. Wilcox became the first Owl since
Jack Cooper in the 2012 season finale at Stonehill to return a pick for a score.
Kayjuan Bynum (Springfield, Mass.) and
Jonathan Balcacer (Peabody, Mass.) also added interceptions.
Quarterback
Raymond Catapano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) completed 14-of-20 passes for 138 yards and added 17 rushes for 50 yards.
Donald Thomas (Bronx, N.Y.) paced the ground attack with 70 yards on 17 carries.
Gary Williams (West Haven, Conn.) had six catches for 39 yards to lead the receivers.
The Owls struck first with an impressive 16-play, 98-yard drive that took nearly nine minutes of the first quarter. The drive concluded with a one-yard touchdown run from
Robert Thomas (New York, N.Y.). Jeff Groth (Shelton, Conn.) added the PAT to make it 7-0.
Stonehill answered right back on its next possession with a 3-yard pass from Tom Sydeski to Colin Smith, and the successful PAT tied the score.
Groth then followed with a career-long 41-yard field goal with only 26 seconds left in the first half to give the Owls a 10-7 lead at the intermission.
There was no scoring in the third quarter. Wilcox then made it a two score game when he picked off a Sydeski pass and took it 25 yards for the score and a 17-7 lead after Groth's PAT.
Stonehill closed the gap to three in the final minutes. Groth lined up for a 47-yarder, but the field goal was blocked and returned for a touchdown by the Skyhawks.Â
The Owls are back in action next Saturday for a home game against LIU-Post.
