Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. –
Bailey McGinnis (North Branford, Conn.) and
Vienna Pallisco (Sherman, Conn.) netted second half goals for the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team, but a late rally came up short in a 4-3 loss to Franklin Pierce on Friday.
The Owls moved to 1-2 with the result, while the Ravens are now 2-0.
Franklin Pierce scored twice – markers from Courtney Kelly and Carly Canavan – in a span of 1:46 early in the first half to take a 2-0 lead. Then, just about 11 minutes later, Tori Gamache connected to give the Ravens a 3-0 advantage.
Kristi Montemurro (New Milford, Conn.) converted on a flip shot over the shoulder of Ravens' goalie Meaghan Williams to cut the deficit to 3-1 with 4:39 left in the first half. That score remained the same at halftime.
Gamache's second of the day just over four minutes into the second half restored the three-goal lead for the Ravens.
The Owls controlled the play for the better part of the final 20 minutes. McGinnis connected on a tough angle shot from along the goal line to make it 4-2 with 25:04 left. Pallisco followed with a rebound goal off a penalty corner with 5:54 remaining, but the Owls would get no closer.
Southern Connecticut returns to action next Friday night for a non-conference road game against Merrimack.
