SCSU Field Hockey Defeats Mercy, 5-1, For Season's First Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team posted a commanding 5-1 victory over Mercy on Saturday afternoon at Jess Dow Field. The Owls (1-3) showcased a balanced attack, outshooting the Mavericks (1-3) 21-13 and earning a decisive edge in penalty corners (12-6), while goalkeeper Rachel Miller anchored the defense with six saves.

SCSU wasted no time asserting dominance, striking first in the second quarter. Natalia Fiato set up Taylor Leckey for a goal at 17:11, giving the Owls a 1-0 lead. The momentum carried as Isabella Folster doubled the advantage at 21:13, again assisted by Fiato. Folster struck again at 26:20, this time with Lindsey Onofrio providing the assist, pushing the lead to 3-0 by halftime.

The third quarter saw SCSU extend their lead early when Ruby Webb scored at 35:30, assisted by Folster, making it 4-0. Mercy managed a response with an unassisted penalty stroke from Madison Brefka at 43:30, narrowing the gap to 4-1. However, the Owls sealed the deal in the fourth quarter when Onofrio scored off a corner set with assists from Keana Criscuolo and Leckey—at 50:28, finalizing the score at 5-1.

Offensively, Folster led the Owls with two goals and an assist while Onofrio and Leckey both added a goal and an assist. Fiato added two assists, highlighting the Owls' teamwork. Miller's performance in goal was pivotal, facing seven shots on goal and allowing just one, securing the win.

Mercy's goalkeeper tandem of Rebecca McClure (4 saves, 26:46) and Kaylise McClure (6 saves, 33:14) kept the Mavericks in the game early, but SCSU's relentless pressure proved too much. The Mavericks managed 13 shots, with Charlotte Sabert leading with five, but could only convert once.

SCSU returns to action next week with a pair of road contests next week. The Owls travel to Rindge, N.H. to take on Franklin Pierce on Tuesday, Sept. 16 and then its on to Colchester, Vt. to face Saint Michael's on Saturday, Sept. 20.
