Women's Soccer Returns to Action with Two Games This Week

THE WEEK AHEAD
The Southern Connecticut State University Women's Soccer team concludes its four game road trip to start the season at Adelphi on Wednesday. The Owls will host their home opener on Saturday afternoon, with a 1 p.m. kickoff against Franklin Pierce.
 
IN THE PRESEASON NORTHEAST-10 COACHES POLL
The Owls were picked ninth in the Northeast-10 Preseason coaches poll. The Owls received 100 points, while Saint Rose was tabbed as the preseason favorite.

ALL-TIME VERSUS ADELPHI AND FRANKLIN PIERCE
The Owls hold a 5-2-1 advantage all-time against Adelphi. Southern enters Saturday's contest with a 2-19 all-time record against Franklin Pierce.
 
PREVIOUS MEETINGS
Adelphi earned a 3-1 victory over SCSU on Sept. 18, 2013 at Jess Dow Field. Senior Suzane Pires scored the Owls lone goal in the 47th minute off an assist from Bryana Poulin. Franklin Pierce also won their only matchup against Southern in 2013, taking a 2-1 decision on Sept. 21 in Rindge, N.H.

SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
Adelphi (3-0, 1-0 NE-10) has outscored its opponents 14-0 through its first three games, scoring at least four goals each time out. AU is coming off a 4-0 shutout victory in its NE-10 opener against Southern New Hampshire. Sophomore Laura Gomez, sophomore Victoria Antonio and junior Olivia Czavar have three goals apiece to lead the team. The Panthers hold an impressive 44-4 advantage over their opponents in the shots on goal department. Senior goalkeeper Sam Whitney is 3-0 on the year and stopped all three shots she has faced.
 
SCOUTING THE RAVENS
Franklin Pierce (2-1, 0-1 NE-10) looks to rebound after dropping their NE-10 opener 1-0 at Assumption on Saturday. The Ravens have had nine different goal scorers in their three games, led by junior Hannah Weagle who has two. Fernanda Marquez leads the squad with three assists. Freshman GK Casey Cook (2-1) has two shutouts and eight saves to start off her collegiate career.

LAST TIME OUT
The Owls dropped a 1-0 decision in their only game last week at Merrimack. Sophomore Erica Ridella made three saves in goal for SCSU.
 
WELCOME TO THE CLUB
 The Owls welcome 10 newcomers to the squad for the 2014 season - Hannah Bodner, Victoria Buonanni, Victoria Conde, Brooke Davis, Erica Friel, Kimberly Livecchi, Taylor Moore, Marissa Pearson, Betti Worth and Kasie Wilk.

THE CAPTAINS
Head Coach Adam Cohen has announced that seniors Hannah Spreckley and Sarah Brochu will serve as team captains for the Owls this fall.

LOOKING BACK AT 2013
The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team enjoyed a fine 2013 season and narrowly missed out on a berth in the Northeast-10 Tournament. The Owls finished the year with seven wins. The team also excelled in the classroom, as they were once again honored by the National Soccer Coaches Accosiation of America with a Team Academic Award for posting a cumulative team grade point average of higher than 3.0.

PIRES NAMED THIRD OWLS' ALL-AMERICAN
Senior Suzane Pires became the third player in Owls' history to earn All-America honors when she was recognized by the NSCAA at the conclusion of last year. She joins Theresa Uliano and Beba Stratakis as Owls' All-Americans.

PIRES EARNS ALL-REGION HONORS
For the third year in a row, Suzane Pires was named to the All-Region teamfor her play during the 2013 season.  

TWO NAMED ALL-NEW ENGLAND, ALL-ECAC
Hannah Spreckley and Suzane Pires were both selected  to the All-New England and the All-ECAC teams for their play during the 2013 season.
 
OWLS THRIVE INDIVIDUALLY IN THE CLASSROOM
From the academic standpoint, the Owls were honored with the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the fifth year in a row. Twenty-one student-athletes were also named to the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll for posting a semester grade point average of at least 3.0.

PAIR COLLECT ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS
Hannah Spreckley and Suzane Pires were recognized by the Northeast-10 Conference for their play during the 2013 season. Pires collected First-Team All-League honors, while Spreckley was named to the Second-Team.

ON DECK
Next week, the Owls head back out on the road for two Northeast-10 matchups. On Tuesday, Sept. 23 Southern will battle American Int'l at 7 p.m., before traveling to Manchester, N.H. to take on Southern New Hampshire on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m.
