Adelphi Downs Women's Soccer, 4-0, Wednesday Evening

Box Score

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team dropped a tough, 4-0, Northeast-10 Conference battle against Adelphi University Wednesday afternoon at Motamed Field.

In the opening minutes of play, SCSU midfielder Betti Worth (Bolton, England) had the opportunity to put the Owls ahead, but could not find the back of the net against the Panthers' goalkeeper Samantha Whitney.

As the half progress, Adelphi took control of the game and grabbed a late 1-0 lead over SCSU. At the 43:45 mark, Adelphi's Melissa Rubin tallied her first goal of the season after putting the ball right over SCSU goalkeeper Erica Ridella's head.

Even though SCSU was outshot, 5-3, in the first half, the Owls' defense came out pressuring the Panthers in the second half. With the pressure on the Panthers' offense, Donna Liotine was able to find the back on the net off a penalty kick in the 60th minute of play to extend the lead to 2-0.

With the clock winding down, both SCSU and Adelphi were not given up. The Owls had two opportunities from Kieran DeBiase (Prospect, Conn.) and Samantha Emery (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) to tie the match at two, but at the 69:43 mark Christine Dutcher put the hosts up 3-0.

Four minutes later, Adelphi struck again with an insurance goal from Samantha Lanza. With less than 12 minutes to play, SCSU and Adelphi decided to change it up in goal with a late goalie substitution.

Shortly after, Bryana Poulin (Webster, Mass.) and Brooke Davis (Hebron, Conn.) had back-to-back opportunities to put the Owls on the board, but both shots just missed the goal and the Owls suffered their third loss of the season.

Ridella recorded three saves on the afternoon, while Whitney collected four saves against the Owls.

The Owls return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 20 for a 1 p.m. home match against Franklin Pierce. Live stats will be available.
