NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Markus Jacobsen (Oslo, Norway) scored two of Southern Connecticut State University's three goals on Saturday night as the No. 7 nationally ranked Owls handled No. 17 nationally ranked Merrimack, 3-0.
The Owls improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in league play with the win. Merrimack is 5-1-1 and 1-1-1.
Jacobsen first scored off a header from a corner kick from Mads Larsen (Trondheim, Norway) in the eleventh minute. His second goal came in the eighty-eighth minute when he had a wide open look on net from about 30 yards out and shot a one-hopper to the far post. Larsen scored the third goal on a pass from Daquan King (Plainville, Conn.) after King drew Merrimack goalkeeper Jose Silva (Northborough, Mass.) out of the net.
The game was physical throughout. Silva drew a red card in the seventy-sixth minute after taking out a Southern player while trying to make a diving tackle. The Owls outshot the Warriors 15-5 and were able to put the game away after Silva was disqualified. His replacement, Andrew Suttle (Northbrook Ill.), gave up two goals on three shots in the final fourteen minutes.
SCSU keeper Noah Varonier (Miller Place, N.Y.) turned away two shots on goal to earn the victory.
SCSU will face Le Moyne in Syracuse, N.Y. on Tuesday.
