Women's Soccer to Host Two Conference Matchups This Week

The Owls host Le Moyne and Saint Anselm this week at Jess Dow Field

THE WEEK AHEAD
The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team returns home for a pair of conference matchups this week, beginning with Le Moyne on Wednesday and continuing on Saturday against Saint Anselm.
 
ALL-TIME VERSUS LE MOYNE AND SAINT ANSELM
The Owls hold an 8-3-3 advantage over Le Moyne, and a record of 9-4-2 against Saint Anselm throughout program history.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS
Last season, the Owls and Dolphins played to a 1-1 draw on Oct. 2 in Syracuse, N.Y.. Southern's Hannah Spreckley evened the scoring in the 87th minute with the Owls lone tally of the match. On Oct. 5, the Owls downed Saint Anselm by a score of 2-0. Senior Suzane Pires registered both of Southern's goals in the victory in Manchester, N.H.

SCOUTING THE DOLPHINS
Le Moyne (4-4-1, 2-2-1 NE-10) is coming off a 2-1 defeat to Merrimack, the only mutual opponent shared with the Owls so far this season. Junior forward Kelly Ristoff leads the squad with seven goals on the season. Her seven markers rank tied for second in the NE-10 and her 14 points are good enough for third in the conference. Sophomore forward Rachel Terry has three goals and one assist through seven games this season.
 
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
Saint Anselm (4-1-1, 2-1-1 NE-10) open up action this week with a match on Tuesday at Saint Michael's, who they defeted 1-0 earlier this season in a non-conference matchup. The Hawks are coming off a 3-1 victory over Pace on Saturday. Sophomore goalkeeper Cassie Quattropani has a 1.15 goals against average through six games this season. Senior keeper Gabriella Primera has stopped all four shots she has faced so far through four appearances. Offensively, the Hawks are led by freshman Alexis Elowitch, who has five goals and is tied for fifth in the NE-10 with 11 points.

IN THE PRESEASON NORTHEAST-10 COACHES POLL
 The Owls were picked ninth in the Northeast-10 Preseason coaches poll. The Owls received 100 points, while Saint Rose was tabbed as the preseason favorite.

LAST TIME OUT
The Owls earned a pair of 2-1 road victories last week over American Int'l and Southern New Hampshire. All of SCSU's goals came in the 72nd minute or later. Sophomore Kieran DeBiase scored once in each game, including the 80th minute game winner at AIC. Maeghan Howard netted the game winner on Saturday at SNHU in the 88th minute. Senior Bryana Poulin picked up an assist in each game and sophomore Erica Ridella made nine saves over the two matches.
 
WELCOME TO THE CLUB
 The Owls welcome 10 newcomers to the squad for the 2014 season - Hannah Bodner, Victoria Buonanni, Victoria Conde, Brooke Davis, Erica Friel, Kimberly Livecchi, Taylor Moore, Marissa Pearson, Betti Worth and Kasie Wilk.

THE CAPTAINS
Head Coach Adam Cohen has announced that seniors Hannah Spreckley and Sarah Brochu will serve as team captains for the Owls this fall.

LOOKING BACK AT 2013
The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team enjoyed a fine 2013 season and narrowly missed out on a berth in the Northeast-10 Tournament. The Owls finished the year with seven wins. The team also excelled in the classroom, as they were once again honored by the National Soccer Coaches Accosiation of America with a Team Academic Award for posting a cumulative team grade point average of higher than 3.0.

PIRES NAMED THIRD OWLS' ALL-AMERICAN
Senior Suzane Pires became the third player in Owls' history to earn All-America honors when she was recognized by the NSCAA at the conclusion of last year. She joins Theresa Uliano and Beba Stratakis as Owls' All-Americans.

PIRES EARNS ALL-REGION HONORS
For the third year in a row, Suzane Pires was named to the All-Region teamfor her play during the 2013 season.  

TWO NAMED ALL-NEW ENGLAND, ALL-ECAC
Hannah Spreckley and Suzane Pires were both selected  to the All-New England and the All-ECAC teams for their play during the 2013 season.
 
OWLS THRIVE INDIVIDUALLY IN THE CLASSROOM
From the academic standpoint, the Owls were honored with the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the fifth year in a row. Twenty-one student-athletes were also named to the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll for posting a semester grade point average of at least 3.0.

PAIR COLLECT ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS
Hannah Spreckley and Suzane Pires were recognized by the Northeast-10 Conference for their play during the 2013 season. Pires collected First-Team All-League honors, while Spreckley was named to the Second-Team.

ON DECK
Next week, the Owls travel to cross-town rival New Haven on Tuesday, Oct. 7 for a 4 p.m. showdown before returning home on Saturday, Oct. 11 to take on Saint Michael's at 1 p.m.
