Betti Worth knocked in the game-winning goal in the 94
th minute to give the Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team a 2-1 overtime victory over LIU Post in Friday's season-opener.
The Owls jumped on the board first in the 13
th minute off a corner kick.
Bryana Poulin sent a corner kick into the box that deflected off a Pioneer player and into the net for an own goal.
The Owls held onto the one goal advantage until the 80
th minute, when Lauren Bellone netted the equalizer for the Pioneers with 10:06 remaining in regulation.
With the score still tied after 90 minutes, the game entered overtime where Worth, making her SCSU debut, delivered the golden goal for the Owls. Following a free kick from just inside midfield, Worth picked up a loose ball inside the box, beat the keeper with a move to the right and buried the game winner in the lower left corner of the net. Victoria Conde, who was also making her collegiate debut, assisted on the game-winner.
Sophomore
Erica Ridella earned the win in goal for the Owls, making one save.
The Owls return to action on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 4:30 p.m. in a non-conference matchup against Bridgeport. The game will be held at in Brookville, N.Y. on the campus of LIU Post.
