Volleyball Prepares for Four Matches This Week

Owls face Bentley University in a Northeast-10 Conference showdown on Thursday evening at 7 p.m.

HEADING INTO WEEK SEVEN
The Southern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team returns to action this week with four games, while one of the games is a NE-10 Conference showdown against Bentley University. Southern Conn. opens week seven with back-to-back home games against Mercy College (Tuesday)and Bentley (Thursday) before closing out the week with a volleyball tri-match in Rutherford, N.J. against Georgian Court and Felician (Saturday).

TEAM INFORMATION AND RECORDS
- Mercy is currently on a three game losing streak while posting a 5-15 overall record in the East Coast Conference. The Mavericks lost their last three games to Assumption (3-1), Saint Rose (3-0) and Molloy (3-0).
-Bentley ranks fourth in the Northeast-10 Conference with a 4-1 conference mark and has a 11-6 overall record. The Falcons won their last two games against Saint Michael's (3-0) and Stonehill College (3-1).
-Georgian Court holds a 10-10 overall recording coming into week seven, but will play three games before facing the Owls for a second time this season. Back on Sept. 10, the Lions defeated the Owls 3-1.
-Felician is currently 4-15 on the season while posting a 2-2 record in the month of October. The Golden Falcons have three games before Saturday's match against the Owls.

Southern Conn. holds a 10-8 edge over Mercy College in the all-time series.

ALL-TIME VS. BENTLEY
Bentley leads the all-time series against Southern Conn. 20-2.

ALL-TIME VS. GEORGIAN COURT
Despite the loss earlier this season, Southern Conn. still leads Georgian Court in the all-time series 4-3.

Southern Conn. leads the all-time series against Felciian 10-0.

WEEK SIX RECAP
Southern Conn. posted a 1-1 record in week six as the Owls defeated Dominican, 3-0, on Monday evening, but fell to NE-10 foe Le Moyne College, 3-1, on Saturday morning. Sophomore Alexandra Nimz recorded her sixth double-double of the season at Le Moyne with 32 assists and 16 digs.

LAST WEEK LEADERS
Carly Balskus and Leanna Jadus led the Owls' offense last week each averaging 4.00 kills per set. Balskus played in just one set for the Owls, but she did average 1.00 service aces, 3.00 digs and 1.00 blocks per set for the Owls. Jadus had yet another impressive week as she played in all seven sets and averaged 0.14 service aces, 2.86 digs and 0.43 blocks per set.

AMONG NE-10
Entering week seven, Leanna Jadus remains fourth in the Northeast-10 Conference with 221 total kills.

TEAM STAT BREAK-DOWN
-The Owls are averaging 10.49 kills per set while posting a team hitting percentage of .142.
-Southern Conn.'s defense leads the conference in block assists (204), solo blocks (35) and total blocks (137) as well as ranks second in the conference in blocks per set with 1.83.
-This season the Owls are 1-8 in three-set matches, 2-5 in four-set matches and 1-3 in five-set matches.

LOOKING BACK AT LAST YEAR
Southern Connecticut finished the 2014 season with an overall record of 7-22 and a conference record of 3-11.

O'CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
For the second year in a row, seniors Morgan Carman and Kelly Gunneson will serve as team captains for the Owls this fall.

RETURNING TO THE COURT
The Owls have 13 student-athletes returning from last year's team, including Morgan Carman, Jasmin Barrett, Taylor Carlson, Kelly Gunneson, Sean Taylor, Alexandra Nimz, Carly Balskus, Alexandria Jurgens, Taylor Flowers, Faith Ford, Briauna Tutwiler, Haley Samuelson and Taylor MacDowell.

OWLS WELCOME FIVE NEWCOMERS
The Owls welcome five student-athletes to the team this year: Bridgette Walsh, Jennifer Dawson, Leanna Jadus, Jessica Schmitz and Janae Owen.

Southern Connecticut was selected 12th in the Northeast-10 Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, as voted on by the league's coaches.

GUNNESON AND HAUSER EARN ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Kelly Gunneson and Nicole Hauser were two out of 37 SCSU student-athletes that were named to the Division II Athletics Directors Association Academic Achievement award for the 2014-15 academic year. The student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, have attended a minimum of two years (four semesters) of college level work and have been an active member of an intercollegiate team during his/her last academic year.

GUNNESON INDUCTED INTO NATIONAL MATH HONOR SOCIETY
Last fall, Kelly Gunneson was inducted into Pi Mu Epsilon, the National Math Honor Society.

GUNNESON NAMED TO NE-10 ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
Senior Kelly Gunneson was named to the Northeast-10 Conference Volleyball All-Academic Team for her work in the classroom and on the court last fall. To be eligible for selection to the academic teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: participated in at least half of the team's competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; achieved a 3.3 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution.

ON DECK
The Owls are back in action on October 20 as team resumes NE-10 play with a road game at Adelphi.
