Box Score SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team defeated the Le Moyne Dolphins 1-0 in a long double overtime battle on Wednesday afternoon.
The Owls improve to 4-7 overall and 4-5 and in the NE-10, while the Dolphins fall to 1-10-1 and 0-8-1 in the conference. The loss snaps a three game losing streak for Southern Connecticut and keeps the Owls in the mix for an NE-10 Tournament bid.
Most of the Owls' best chances came in overtime, the last of which became the first goal of the year by
Hannah Bodner (Bolton, Conn.). The goal came in the 108th minute when her cross that was intended for
Kieran DeBiase (Prospect, Conn.) was deflected into the net by the Le Moyne goalkeeper Tori Corsaro.
The Southern Connecticut offense had multiple chances to score in both overtime periods. DeBiase had an opportunity in the 103rd minute. The Owls hit the counter attack as Bodner handled a deflection and passed it to
Caroline Staudle (New Windsor, Conn.) at the right wing. Staudle centered it to DeBiase at the top of the box and Corsaro came out of the goal to defend DeBiase, so she chipped the ball over the goalkeeper's head. Her shot hit the outside of the goalpost and bounced past the end line.
The minute before DeBiase's attempt, Staudle had a chance to score. She took a long pass from
Marissa Pearson (Trumbull, Conn.) and turned and shot before the back line could get to her, but it was right at Corsaro in net.
In the 94th minute, DeBiase ripped a shot from roughly 25 yards out, nearly scoring under the crossbar, but Corsaro jumped up to make the save and punch the ball over the crossbar. The Dolphins cleared the ensuing corner kick.
DeBiase and
Victoria Conde (Madrid, Spain) led both teams in shots with five and shots on goal with two. The Owls took 22 shots in the match.
Southern Connecticut hosts Merrimack on Saturday at 12 noon.
