NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Despite another double-double performance rom sophomore
Alexandra Nimz (Littleton, Colo.), the Southern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team lost to Bentley University, 3-1, in a Northeast-10 Conference showdown on Thursday evening at Pelz Gymnasium. Following the loss, the Owls fall to 5-17 on the season and 1-6 in league play.
Nimz recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 38 assists and 11 digs to go along with her two kills and a block. Junior
Faith Ford (New Britain, Conn.) led the Owls' offense with 10 kills and two block assists while sophomore
Sean Taylor (Kent, Wash.) chipped in with nine kills, two digs and three block assists. Four different Owls registered 10 or more digs as senior
Morgan Carman (Mesa, Ariz.) led the quartet with 18 total digs.
Southern Connecticut came out strong to start off the first set grabbing a 10-5 lead before the Falcons called a timeout to regroup. The Owls continued to extend their lead to eight, 14-6, off a 9-1 run that started off a kill from Ford. Bentley called their second timeout after a kill from
Alexandria Jurgens (Cornwall, N.Y.), 19-11, but was unsuccessful to stop the Owls from taking a 1-0 lead heading into the next set.
Bentley and Southern Connecticut battled through four ties until a kill from Ford spark a 4-0 spurt to put the hosts ahead by two, 8-6. Bentley was able to regain the lead, 11-8, and continued to push ahead 19-12. Not long after, Southern Connecticut threatened the Falcons bringing the score to within two, 24-22, but the Falcons tied the set at 1-1 with the 25-22 second set victory.
Bentley continued its momentum into the third set as the Falcons quickly opened the frame with a seven-point lead, 14-7, before grabbing a nine-point lead, 19-10, heading into an Owls' timeout. Southern Connecticut's defense could not stop the Falcons from ending the set on a 6-5 run.
The fourth set was similar to the second set as both team battled through five ties before Bentley took a 14-8 lead over the hosts. Southern Connecticut battled to within four, 14-10, off a kill from
Kelly Gunneson (Cheshire, Conn.), but Bentley continued pushed ahead and ended the set and match with a 25-17 fourth set victory.
The Owls are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 17 as the team travels to Rutherford, N.J. for a non-conference battle between Georgian Court and Felician College. Game times are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
