Men's Soccer Hosts Two Games This Week

The men's soccer team takes on Adelphi and Assumption this week.

THIS PAST WEEK
Southern Connecticut split its games last week. The Owls played two road games, dropping the first one to Bentley 2-1 and defeating Saint Rose 1-0.
Chae Brangman scored his fourth goal of the year against Bentley, but it came when the Owls were already down 2-0. Southern Connecticut had trouble containing Nick Hoffman who accounted for a goal and an assist. Bentley is now third in the NE-10 with a record of 6-3.
Sean Black scored the goal in the win over the Golden Knights. It was his second goal since joining the Owls this season. Despite allowing 16 shots to the Golden Knights, only four of them were on goal, and Noah Varonier was able to save all of them. He earned his third shutout of the year.

CONFERENCE STANDINGS
Southern Conn. is now 6-2-1 in the NE-10 and holds sole possession of second place in the conference. The Owls have four games remaining on their schedule and two of them are against teams currently in the top five of the conference: Southern New Hampshire and Adelphi.

THIS WEEK
Southern Connecticut plays two home games this week. The Owls will host Adelphi on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The Panthers will enter the matchup with a conference record of 5-2-2. Then on Saturday, they will host Assumption at 6 p.m.
 
SCOUTING ADELPHI
The Panthers finished last week with a record of 0-1-1. They tied Franklin Pierce and lost to No. 3 Southern New Hampshire. The Panthers and Owls have faced eight common opponents. Southern Connecticut is 5-3 in those games, while Adelphi is 4-1-3. The Panthers are led by Caelan Hueber who has seven goals on the year, tied for first in the conference with four other players including Louis Greenway-Tambini. James Thristino has six goals, himself. Hueber and Thristino are the highest scoring duo in the conference. Sergio Reyes has allowed fourteen goals in thirteen games and has a save percentage of 69.6-percent.

ALL-TIME vs. ADELPHI
The Owls are 4-3-0 all-time against Adelphi, including a win in the NE-10 Tournament Semi-Finals last year. Markus Jacobsen and graduate Daquan King scored the goals in the win last year. Jacobsen is redshirting this year.

SCOUTING ASSUMPTION
The Greyhounds will play Le Moyne on Wednesday before traveling to New Haven to face the Owls on Saturday. Assumption and Southern Connecticut share nine common opponents as of Monday: the Owls are 4-4-1 against those teams; Assumption is 2-6-1. As of Monday, the Greyhounds are 1-2-3 in their last six games, scoring just two goals over that span. Assumption has scored seven goals in fourteen games, led by Ethan Morrow, who has two. The saving grace for the Greyhounds has been their goalkeeper Dana King, who has seen the majority of time in net. King has allowed ten goals and made 49 saves on the year. That is a save percentage of 83-percent, good for third in the conference. His goal against average of 0.88 is second best in the conference. Assumption is 0-2-3 on the road this year.
 
ALL-TIME vs. ASSUMPTION
The Owls are 13-2-1 all-time against the Greyhounds, including going 3-0-1 in their last three games.

BEATING NO. 15 MERRIMACK
Chae Brangman scored both goals for the Owls in the win over the Warriors. He was the recipient of a pass from Louis Greenway-Tambini as he was about 10 yards away from the goal and fired it past Merrimack's keeper Lucas Rezende. Merrimack responded right before the half with a goal by Augusto Silva, but Brangman came back in the 74th minute, drawing a foul on Rezende and earning a penalty kick, which he scored to give the Owls a 2-1 lead and win.

THE PRESEASON NE-10 COACHES POLL
SCSU was picked second in the NE-10 preseason coaches poll.  The Owls received 154 points and one first place vote out of 14.

LOOKING BACK AT LAST SEASON
The Owls finished 2014 with a 15-5 record and a No. 17 national ranking in the NSCAA poll. SCSU reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and before that, qualified for the finals of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The Owls averaged just over two goals per game, with Daquan King and Markus Jacobsenleading the team with 10 goals each. Defense was the Owls' strength. Led by NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year Sebastian Brems, they allowed 1.16 goals per game. Freshman keeper Noah Varonier was a stud in net for the Owls, saving 71-percent of the shots he faced.
 
THE CAPTAIN
Head coach Tom Lang announced that redshirt senior Tyler Naef will captain the Owls this fall. This will mark the second straight year that Naef will serve as a team captain.
 
SCORING PUNCH COMING BACK
Southern Connecticut will see two of its top five scorers from last season return - Markus Jacobsen and Chae Brangman. Brangman finished second on the team last year with six goals. The next highest returning scorers are Brandon Rowlinson and Ignacio Navarro, who each scored two goals last year.
 
2014 ALL-CONFERENCE PERFORMERS
Seven players from the 2014 team were named to the All-Conference Team:
Sebastian Brems was named First-Team All-Conference and NE-10 Defender of the year.
Daquan King and Mads Larsen were named Second-Team All-Conference.
Chae Brangman, Jonas Folstad, and Markus Jacobsen were named Third-Team All-Conference.
• Brangman and Noah Varonier were named to the All-Rookie Team.
• Brangman was also named Rookie of the Year.
 
WELCOME TO THE CLUB
The Owls welcome 14 newcomers to the squad for the 2015 season, including freshmen Ansbito Basquin, Jose Canahui, Weens Simon, Seth Dasher, Daniel Silva,Alejandro Rivera, Dylan Hogan, Alex Brown, and Daniel Prendergast. The Owls also welcome transfers Louis Greenway-Tambini, Sean Black, Alain Laurent, Mitchel White and Joe Lucas Santos.
 
IN SEASON OPENERS
The Owls are 31-9-6 in season openers.
 
LOOKING BACK AT 2014
The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team was ranked as high as No. 1 in the region and No. 5 in the nation in 2014.
 
TRIO NAMED ALL-ECAC/QUARTET ALL-REGION
Sebastian Brems, Daquan King, and Mads Larsen were named All-ECAC for their efforts on the pitch during the 2014 season. Brems, Markus Jacobsen, Jonas Folstad, and Chae Brangman were named to the NSCAA/Continental Tire Division II All-East Region Team.
 
ON DECK
Next week is the last week of the regular season for the Owls.They will host Stonehill on Tuesday before traveling to play the conference's top team on Friday: Southern New Hampshire.
