Women's Soccer Wraps Up Regular Season With Senior Day on Saturday

Victoria Buonanni and the Owls split home and road matches this week.

THIS PAST WEEK
Southern Connecticut finished last week with a tie and a loss.
Victoria Conde scored her third goal in two games in the 1-1 tie against Stonehill. The Skyhawks got on the board by virtue of an own goal in the 58th minute. Erica Ridella stopped four Stonehill shots in the tie.
• The Owls returned home to face No. 17 Saint Rose, in what ended up being a 2-1 loss in overtime. Christine Allard scored her second goal of the year off a corner kick in the 20th minute. Saint Rose had no shots on goal in the first half but ended up with five by the end of the match. The Owls had eight shots on goal with Kieran DeBiase and Betti Worth leading the way with two each.
 
CONFERENCE STANDINGS
As of Monday, the Owls are ninth in the NE-10 Conference, two points behind eighth place New Haven. The top eight teams make the conference tournament.

THIS WEEK
Southern Connecticut plays one home game and one away game this week. The Owls will start on the road at Saint Michael's on Wednesday at 3 p.m. They'll return home to face Bentley on Senior Day on Saturday at 1 p.m.
 
SCOUTING SAINT MICHAEL'S
The Purple Knights have not won since September 9 when they beat Lyndon State. Meagan Brady leads the team with six goals out of the 19 they have scored all year. Megan LeCours and Kaylee Sullivan have split time in net for Saint Michael's this season. LeCours has a goals against average of 1.33 and a save percentage of 80.9-percent along with a won/loss record of 1-5. Sullivan has allowed 3.20 goals per game and has saved 66.3-percent of shots faced. Her record is 0-8-1.
 
ALL-TIME vs. SAINT MICHAEL'S
The Owls are 10-4-1 all-time against the Purple Knights, including wins in their last six matchups.

SCOUTING BENTLEY
The Falcons will travel to AIC on Wednesday before coming to Jess Dow Field on Saturday. As of Monday, the Owls and Falcons have eleven common opponents, with SCSU going 5-5-1 in those games and Bentley going 1-9-1. They won their most recent game against Saint Michael's, but lost four straight prior to facing the Purple Knights. Ana Tantum leads Bentley in goals with eight, which is tied for third in the conference. Deirdre Macrorie has allowed 20 goals on 97 shots, which is a save percentage of 79.4-percent.
 
ALL-TIME vs. BENTLEY
The Owls are 11-5-2 all-time against the Falcons and are currently on a five game winning streak.

CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
For her efforts in the win over Merrimack, Victoria Conde has been named the Northeast-10 Player of the Week. It is the second time an Owl has received the award: Caroline Staudle was honored four weeks ago for scoring two goals and adding an assist against Pace and Franklin Pierce.

STAUDLE HITTING HER STRIDE
Caroline Staudle was a monster on the field for the Owls against Pace and Franklin Pierce. She assisted on Victoria Buonanni's goal in the win over Pace, then scored the first two goals of the game at Franklin Pierce.

NE-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
For her efforts in the two road conference wins last week, Staudle was named the Northeast-10 Player of the Week.
 
WIN #1
The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday against Assumption, a 3-2 victory with goals by Victoria Buonanni, Victoria Conde and Caroline Staudle. They fell behind 1-0 in the fifth minute but tied up the game before halftime and took the lead off of a free position kick by Conde and extended it with a chip in goal by Staudle.
 
THE PRESEASON NE-10 COACHES POLL
The Owls have been picked to finish fifth in the Northeast-10 Preseason Coaches' Poll. The team received 148 points.

IN SEASON OPENERS
The Owls are 15-3-1 in season openers.
 
LAST TIME WE SAW THEM...
...The Owls won the ECAC Tournament, beating Adelphi in penalty kicks. Prior to that, SCSU defeated Newberry College, 2-1, in the ECAC semifinals.
 
LOOKING BACK AT LAST SEASON
Southern Connecticut finished 2014 with an 11-6-2 record overall. The Owls averaged just over one goal per game and allowed just under one. The strength of the Owls was their defense, led by keeper Erica Ridella. She allowed 17 goals in 19 games and saved 85-percent of shots she faced. Caroline Staudle led the team with six goals and 12 points last year, followed by Victoria Buonanni with five goals andKieran DeBiase with three.
 
THE CAPTAINS
Head coach Adam Cohen announced that senior Betti Worth and juniors Christine Allard and Erica Ridella will captain the Owls this fall. They will all be first-year captains.
 
NICE TO SEE YOU AGAIN
Southern Connecticut will return 10 out of 14 players who started 10 or more games last year, including its top three scorers: Staudle, Buonanni and DeBiase.
 
WELCOME TO THE CLUB
The Owls welcome 10 newcomers to the squad for the 2015 season, including freshmen Megan Richardson, Emily LePage, Alyson Clarke, Juliana Santos, Taylor Bilyak, Mikaela Magee, Aaliyah Busby and Nicole Cronin. The Owls also welcome transfers Dolci Wagner and Shannon Murphy.
 
LOOKING BACK AT 2014
The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team was ranked as high as No. 3 in the NCAA East Region rankings in 2014.
 
HONORABLE OWLS
Sarah Brochu took home the most awards of anyone on the team last year, most notably being named the Defensive Player of the Year and as an NE-10 Conference First-Team honoree. Also named to the All-Conference teams were Keri DeBiase,Erica Ridella, Victoria Buonanni, and Victoria Conde. DeBiase and Ridella were named Third-Team All-Conference, while Bounanni and Conde were named to the All-Rookie Team.
