Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. -
Louis Greenway Tambini (Nottingham, England) scored two goals in Southern Connecticut State University's 2-1 overtime win over Stonehill on Tuesday evening, adding to his team and conference high total of 10 goals on the year.
With the win, the Owls improve to 9-5-1 overall and 8-3-1 in the NE-10, while the Skyhawks fall to 6-8-2 and 3-7-2.
The game winning goal came in the 96th minute.
Christian Samaniego (Toronto, Ontario) sped up the right side of the field and centered the ball to Greenway Tambini who had no one in front of him. He took a few touches to get closer to net and fired a shot to the near post past Stonehill keeper Luke Besse.
Greenway Tambini first got the Owls on the board in the 11th minute on the counter attack.
Chae Brangman (St. George's, Bermuda) received a through ball from about midfield when the defender who was guarding him fell down. Brangman took the ball into the side of the box with Greenway Tambini at the far post and delivered a cross on the ground to the Owls' leading scorer. Greenway Tambini took the ball with a touch, changed directions, losing the defender in the process, and shot past Besse for his ninth goal of the year.
Stonehill tied it up in the 53rd minute off a goal by Drew Montano. Adam Branco crossed the ball to Montano at the near post where he collided with
Noah Varonier (Miller Place, N.Y.) in net. The ball was deflected off of Montano and in for his seventh goal of the year.
Josh Gustafson (Lebenon, Conn.) had a chance at what would have been a beautiful goal in the 92nd minute. He was in the middle of the box when a cross came his way. He jumped forward and headed the ball in towards the net, but Besse made a fantastic stretching save above his head to keep the game tied for the moment.
The game was a chippy one overall as four yellow cards were given out, two to each team.
Sean Black (London, England) and
Alex Soriano (Wallingford, Conn.) received them for Southern Connecticut.
The Owls close out the season on Friday when they travel to Southern New Hampshire to face the top team in the conference at 5 p.m.
