NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Despite three double-digit kill performances from Alexandria Jurgens (Cornwall, N.Y.), Carly Balskus (Hebron, Conn.) and Kelly Gunneson (Cheshire, Conn.), the Southern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team fell short to American International College, 3-1, on Tuesday evening at Pelz Gymnasium. With the loss, the Owls drop to 6-22 on the season and 1-10 in the NE-10 Conference.

Jurgens led the offensive charge with a team-high 13 kills, two assists, two service aces and four digs for the Owls. Balskus and Gunneson also chipped in with 12 and 11 kills each for the Owls, respectively. Senior Taylor Carlson (Centennial, Colo.) registered a season-high 40 assists to go along with two digs, two blocks and a service ace.

The first and second set were taken away from the Owls as American International took a 2-0 lead heading into set three. The first set saw both teams battle through 13 ties and six lead changes as a kill from Jurgens tied the set at 24-24 before an Owls' ball handling error and Yellow Jackets service ace ended the frame, 26-24. In the second set, the Owls opened the frame with the 12-9 lead until American International took control 22-20, following seven ties. The Owls rallied off two points, but the Yellow Jackets ended the set 25-22.

Southern Connecticut came back for vengeance in the third set as the Owls sent the match into a fourth set after the 25-19 win. The Owls held the lead for the majority of the frame and never looked back against American International.

However in the fourth set, the Yellow Jackets grabbed the early 11-4 lead over the hosts before securing the 25-19 win over the Owls.

The Owls are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 31 as the team battles Franklin Pierce University on Senior Day. Game time is set for 12 p.m. at Pelz Gymnasium.
