Louis Greenway Tambini (Nottingham, England) scored his sixth and seventh goals on the year,
Christian Samaniego (Toronto, Ontario) scored his first goal of the year, and
Sabri Akter (Unionville, Conn.) put one in for good measure as the Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team defeated Saint Anselm on Saturday afternoon, 5-1.
With the win, the Owls improve to 5-3-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the NE-10, while the Hawks fall to 3-5-1 and 0-5-1 in the conference.
Greenway Tambini began the scoring in the 14th minute. He got a hold of the ball at the top of the box and changed directions, which caused the defender to fall down. His shot went to the right of Saint Anselm's keeper Stephen McLeod and gave SCSU an early 1-0 lead.
He scored again the in 28th minute.
Sean Black (London, England), one of the centerbacks, cleared the ball away from the Hawks all the way down to Greenway Tambini on the other side of the field. He fielded the clearance on a bounce, brought the ball into the box, and scored to McLeod's left this time to give the Owls a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
Akter got in on the action in the 49th minute. He was positioned at the far post when
Josh Gustafson (Lebanon, Conn.) crossed the ball into him. Akter got his head on the ball and put it past the keeper for his second goal of the year and second goal in as many home games.Â
Samaniego got on the board in the 62nd minute when he scored off a set piece. It came from about 15 to 20 yards out to McLeod's right. Samaniego's strike cruved in through the wall of defenders and sailed into the net past the diving right hand of McLeod.Â
Less than a minute later, Stephen Ochan put Saint Anselm on the board with a header that made its way past
Noah Varonier (Miller Place, N.Y.) in net. That was the only shot on goal all day for the Hawks.
Southern Connecticut's fifth goal was an own goal scored off a corner kick. Samaniego struck the ball to the far post where it was knocked into the Hawks' goal by one of their own players.
Southern Connecticut finished the game with 16 shots, seven of them on goal.
The Owls have only one game next week: an away conference matchup against Merrimack next Saturday.
