Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team dropped its season finale to Bentley on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 4-3.
The Owls close out the regular season with a record of 6-9-1 and 6-7-1 in the NE-10. Bentley is now 5-10-2 and 3-10-1. Southern Connecticut is still eligable for a spot in the NE-10 Conference playoffs.
Bentley started off the scoring in this high in the fourth minute off a corner kick. Brandi McDonald sent it out to Elena Ochsenreither who was in the middle of the box in front of
Erica Ridella (Warwick, N.Y.). Ochsenreither headed the ball to the far post past Ridella's left to give the Falcons a quick 1-0 lead.
The Owls were just as quick to respond, however.
Betti Worth (Bolton, England) scored her first goal of the year in the ninth minute off a pass from
Victoria Buonanni. Buonanni had the ball on the side of the box when her cross was deflected back to her. With some space in front of her, she passed to Worth in front of the net who shot to the near post and scored, tying the game at one.
Following halftime, the Falcons added two more within the first ten minutes and change of the second half. Jenny Lewis' shot in the 50th minute was saved by Ridella but the rebound went right to Ochsenreither who shot a one-timer past Ridella for her second goal of the game.
Alyssa Valente scored five minutes later on a play which she was initially ruled offside. She picked up a loose ball in the middle of the box and put it right past Ridella to give Bentley a 3-1 lead. The assistant referee ruled that Valente was offside, but after conferring with the head referee, it was ruled a goal.
With the Owls in a hole, they continued to fight and got one goal back on a penalty kick in the 64th minute from
Victoria Conde (Madrid, Spain). Bentley was called for a hand ball in the box during a corner kick, and Conde scored the ensuing penalty kick.
Southern Connecticut got another goal five minutes later from
Caroline Staudle (New Windsor, Conn.). Staudle got a pass from Conde at the top of the box and turned to her left, took a touch, and fired a quick shot to the right of keeper Paige Laliberte.
Valente broke the tie in the 73rd minute with her second goal of the game. The ball fell to her in the middle of the box where she fired a shot to the far post past Ridella, giving Bentley a 4-3 lead and the eventual win.
The Northeast-10 will announce its postseason schedule later tonight.
