Box Score COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team fell below .500 for the first time this season with their 1-0 loss to Saint Michael's in overtime on Saturday afternoon. SCSU entered the game ranked fifth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America East Region poll.
The Owls are now 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Purple Knights inprove to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
Sophomore keeper
Noah Varonier (Miller Place, N.Y.) made five saves in the loss, but was unable to make a save on Colby Ajoku's shot 4:43 into overtime. Ajoku fielded a long free kick from the left side and kicked the ball in with his heel for his first goal of the year. Ajoku had a chance to end the game a minute prior to that, but the Southern Connecticut back line made the save for Varonier. The Purple Knights also had two shots hit the crossbar and a goal that was disallowed in the 90th minute after the referees deemed the ball had crossed the goal line after time had expired.
In the 25th minute,
Louis Greenway Tambini (Nottingham, England) had a chance at his third goal of the year, but his hard shot was denied by Saint Michael's keeper Nicco Roque, who made three saves in the win. The Owls recorded three shots on goal in the loss: two by Greenway Tambini and one by
Christian Samaniego (Toronto, Ontario). Sophomore forward
Chae Brangman (St. George's, Bermuda) was held without a shot for the second time this season.
The Owls' next game is Wednesday, September 23 at 3:30 p.m. They will travel to West Haven to take on the New Haven Chargers.
